The Merseyside Derby against Everton Women: both clubs share a city where the men's fixture is one of the fiercest in England, and the first Women's Super League meeting between them at Anfield, in November 2019.

Liz Deighan, a former England international, founded the club as Newton Ladies in 1989; it became Knowsley United two years later, and only in 1994, when it affiliated with Liverpool F.C., did it take on the Liverpool Ladies name it would carry until the 2018 rebrand to Liverpool F.C. Women. That same year, 1994, brought the first of three straight FA Women's Cup finals, all lost — to Doncaster Belles, then Arsenal, then Croydon on penalties.

The club's defining moment came later and off the pitch as much as on it. In April 2013, Liverpool became the first English club to hand its female players full-time professional contracts, and the Women's Super League titles that followed in 2013 and 2014 were won back to back. A Championship title in 2021–22 marked the club's return to the top flight.

West Lancashire College, then Halton Stadium in Widnes, then Prenton Park as Tranmere Rovers' tenants, and select fixtures at Anfield itself, where 54,115 turned out against Arsenal in October 2023, a Women's Super League attendance record. Since the 2024/25 season, home has been St Helens Stadium, under a ten-year lease, in a town a short distance from Liverpool.
