The structure behind that arrangement dates to 1997, when Paul Hart set up the development squad that joined the Premier Academy League, and it has since grown into a Category 1 academy, a status held since the 2021–22 season. The side now competes in Premier League 2 and the Premier League International Cup.

The academy's clearest claim on the club's history is not a trophy but a captain's armband worn elsewhere. Graduates have gone on to Premier League careers, but Morgan's title is the one the academy points to.

Derby County and Leicester City remain the fixtures that matter most, the East Midlands derby carrying into age-group football the same weight it holds at senior level.
