Petrópolis Futebol Clube only started calling its supporters "Águia" in January 2024, when a partnership that had begun two years earlier turned into a full merger and the team took the mountain city's name for itself. Before that it had been Gonçalense, a São Gonçalo side born from a club sold and relocated from its original home, Tanguá Esporte e Cultura, founded in March 2006. That move south is why the badge and the name changed more than once before the club settled where it now plays.

The old identity has not disappeared entirely. As Gonçalense the team wore blue, red and white and answered to "Tricolor Metropolitano"; the Eagle nickname and the navy-and-yellow kit belong only to the Petrópolis chapter, a deliberate break from the past rather than a continuation of it. Up the hill sits Serrano, long known as "Leão da Serra", and the rivalry between the Lion and the newly arrived Eagle carries the weight of the older club's history rather than any shared one.

Petrópolis Futebol Clube already has a small run of local honours to point to. The Campeonato Carioca Série C and Série B1, both won in 2014, came under the Gonçalense name and eventually opened the way up the state pyramid, while the Taça Corcovado in 2021 and the Taça Santos Dumont in 2023 were picked up during the transition years, before the merger was made official.

Matches are played at the Estádio Atílio Marotti, known locally as "Atilhão", with room for 8,000 in the stands — a modest ground for a club still working out, under its newest name, exactly who its own crowd is.
