Piešťany

Piešťany is a spa town in western Slovakia, built around thermal springs that have drawn visitors for treatment and rest for more than a century. Football arrived there in much the same era, and PFK Piešťany has carried the town's name through a string of political and administrative changes since 1912, when it started out as PAFC Pöstyén under Hungarian naming conventions. The identity shifted with the borders around it: Piešťanský ŠK, then Piešťanský FK, then decades as TJ Slavoj Piešťany under the old Czechoslovak sport structure, before the club settled on its current name in 1988.

None of that history includes a national title or a cup run of any real length. The club has spent its life in the lower tiers of Slovak football, climbing through regional amateur divisions in the second half of the 2010s — the eighth level in 2016–17, the seventh a year later, the sixth the year after that. The nearest it came to a headline was the 2019–20 Slovak Cup, where it reached the second round before Dunajská Streda put it out 0–7.

The names that carry further belong to players who left before the club could build a reputation around them. Filip Hološko moved on to Slovan Bratislava and the Slovakia national team, playing at the 2010 World Cup, while Vladimír Hagara went to Spartak Trnava and Slovan and represented Czechoslovakia at the 1970 World Cup. Piešťany's own derby is a local, not a national, affair — against FK Trebatice, a fixture where results are worth less than the setting.

The senior side plays without a nickname, leaving that role to the youth teams, known as the Piešťany Roosters. Matches are played in front of a ground built for 8,000, of which 920 have seats.
