«The Boro»
Radcliffe had waited seventy-four years for a step that finally arrived in 2023–24, when the club won the Northern Premier League Premier Division and went up to the National League North for the first time in its history. Before that, the highest the Boro had climbed was the old Northern Premier League First Division, taken in 1996–97, and further back a string of North West Counties League titles through the 1980s that carried the club up from regional football one division at a time.
The name on the badge only settled recently. Founded on 24 May 1949 by Jack Pickford and a committee of seventeen at the Owd Tower Inn, the club played for decades as Radcliffe Borough before dropping the middle word for the 2018–19 season. The nickname stuck regardless — "The Boro" still describes a side that plays in royal blue.
Radcliffe's clearest contribution to the professional game is a centre-back. Craig Dawson came through here before Rochdale signed him in 2009 and went on to play for England. Further back, Jody Banim scored in fourteen consecutive games, a run that still stands as an English record, and was sold to Shrewsbury Town for a club-record £20,000. The ground at other times has drawn a different kind of name altogether — Paul Gascoigne and Frank Worthington both turned out there in friendlies, long after their careers had made them recognisable to a crowd that does not usually get to see players like that up close.
What the 2024 promotion did not settle is how Radcliffe copes with National League North itself. A club that spent most of its history winning county and combination titles now measures itself against opponents accustomed to that level, and the step beyond it, into the National League proper, remains untried.
