«The White Elegants»
Redbergslids IK still plays in the Handbollsligan, the top flight it has shaped more than any other club, and every season there arrives with the same expectation attached to the name: a place near the top of Swedish handball. The club carries that weight from twenty domestic championships, a run stretching from 1933 to 2003, won first under the old Svenska mästerskapet cup format and later through Allsvenskan and Elitserien play-offs as the league's format itself changed shape. Two Swedish Cups sit alongside those titles, including a 16–15 extra-time win over SoIK Hellas in 1969.
The one triumph that set Redbergslids apart from every other Swedish club came in 1959, in Paris, where the team beat Frisch Auf Göppingen 18–13 to lift the European Cup. No other Scandinavian side has won it since. That result still anchors the club's identity: a small-hall team from Gothenburg that once stood on top of the continent.
The nickname "The White Elegants" dates to the 1950s, given for the pressed pleats on the white shorts and a style of play the name was meant to flatter. It has followed the club through generations of players raised in its own academy, from Magnus Wislander, voted Handball Player of the Century, to more recent names who came through the same system before moving into the national team.
Home matches are played in front of 550 people at Lundenhallen, a size that has never matched the club's list of honours. Across town, Majornas IK has long been the opponent Redbergslids measures itself against, a Gothenburg derby that has outlasted the trophies on either side of it.
