Renofa Yamaguchi FC dropped back into J3 in 2025, finishing 19th in J2 after nine straight seasons at that level — the best of them an eighth-place finish in 2018.

The name dates only to February 2006, when the Yamaguchi Prefecture Teachers Football Club, running since 1949, reorganised itself to chase a place in the J.League. Renofa is built from three English words — renovation, fight and fine — and the club settled on orange as its colour.

Promotion to J2 came after the 2015 J3 League title. Before that it had spent years working through regional football, taking the Chūgoku League three times and the Yamaguchi Prefectural League once, with the old teachers' club having already won the prefectural championship seven times under its previous name.

Yamaguchi has no fixed rival with a derby name attached to it; matches against Gainare Tottori or Fagiano Okayama pass for regional needle instead.
