Résidence Walferdange

The 2026 season will be the first time Walferdange play in the BGL Ligue. Promotion came through a play-off against FC Jeunesse Canach settled 7:6 on penalties.

The route there was slow. A 5:4 shoot-out win over FC Koeppchen Wormeldange in the 2022/23 Coupe FLF final was struck from the record when the club was found to have fielded an unregistered player; the tie was reversed to a 0:3 defeat. In the league that same season Walferdange finished top of Division 1 and went up to the Ehrenpromotion. The first spell there had run nine straight seasons from 1952, and it took 62 years to get the second.

Nine years ago the club came close to folding altogether, not on the pitch but for want of anyone to run it. In 2017 the committee emptied out; a new one was assembled from parents of the junior players and people who lived in the commune. The synthetic pitch at the Stade Prince Henri was laid the following year, on a ground opened in 1965 that holds 1 000.

Walferdange is the administrative seat of the commune of the same name, in the centre of the Grand Duchy, and takes in Helmsange and Bereldange as well. The club's neighbours in the surrounding communes — Rodange, Mamer, Lorentzweiler — supply most of its regular fixtures. Nothing in the record identifies a derby.

So has the year in the club's own name: FC Résidence Walferdange 1908. It was founded that year under the chairmanship of Nicolas Welter. The occupation authorities renamed it FK'08 Walferdingen in 1940; the old name came back in 1944, and a youth team followed two years earlier than that, in 1942.
