In the spring of 1944, with the north of Italy under occupation and the league scattered, the players of Spezia went to the final of the Campionato Alta Italia against the Torino side that would dominate the decade, and beat them 2–1. The Italian federation only recognised the title in 2002.
The Swiss banker Hermann Hurni put the club together in 1906, and the first shirts — light blue and white — arrived as a gift from Crystal Palace. The white and black came five years later, borrowed from Pro Vercelli, and stayed.
The modern history breaks in two. In 2008 the club went bankrupt and was refounded by Gabriele Volpi, starting again in Serie D. By the 2025–26 season the club was back in Serie C.
Genoa provide the Derby Ligure.
