Coppa Italia
Established in 1922, the Coppa Italia stands as the primary national domestic cup competition in Italian football. Organized by the Lega Serie A under the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), it occupies the second tier of importance in the country's club football structure, sitting below the Serie A championship and above the Supercoppa Italiana. The tournament's origins were marked by a schism with major clubs, leading to the Confederation of Italian Football (CCI). While the inaugural edition was won by lower-division side Vado, the competition faced interruptions, resuming permanently only in 1958 to establish its modern format.
The current structure features 44 teams, comprising all 20 Serie A and Serie B clubs alongside the top four from Serie C. It operates as a knockout tournament without group stages. Early rounds, including the Preliminary, First, Second, Round of 16, and Quarter-finals, are played as single-leg matches. A significant reform introduced in the 2024–25 season removed extra time from these early encounters, meaning drawn matches proceed directly to a penalty shoot-out. Extra time is reserved exclusively for the Semi-finals and the Final. The Semi-finals consist of two legs, while the Final is a single match contested at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Winners earn direct qualification for the UEFA Europa League group stage. Should the champion have already secured a Champions League spot through league performance, the Europa League berth passes to the next highest-placed Serie A team not already qualified for European competition. The winner also faces the Serie A champion in the Supercoppa Italiana. If the same club wins both competitions, the Coppa Italia runner-up takes the place of the winner in the Super Cup. Juventus holds the record for the most titles with 14, followed by Inter Milan and AS Roma with nine each. Bologna added to their tally by securing their third title in 2025.
