About

Serie A stands as the top tier of the Italian football league system, operated by Lega Serie A. Established in its current professional, nationwide round-robin format for the 1929–30 season by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), it heavily influenced the restructuring of the earlier regionalized knockout format that had existed since 1898. The league currently consists of 20 clubs, a number confirmed for the 2024–25 season after a vote to maintain it rather than reduce to 18. The season runs from August to May in a double round-robin format, where each team plays 38 matches, comprising 19 home and 19 away fixtures. There are no end-of-season play-offs for the championship; the title is decided by total points. Tie-breakers for the Scudetto, European spots, or relegation involve single-legged matches at neutral venues. The bottom three teams are relegated to Serie B, while three teams are promoted from Serie B, with the top two advancing automatically and the third determined via a playoff among teams ranked 3rd to 8th. Juventus is the most successful club with 36 titles, followed by Inter Milan (21) and AC Milan (19). The current champion is Napoli, who won the 2024–25 season; Inter Milan won the 2023–24 title. Notable historical events include the introduction of the Scudetto badge for winners in 1924, and the Calciopoli scandal in 2006, which led to Juventus being stripped of two titles and relegated. Serie A differs from the Coppa Italia, a knockout tournament involving lower-division teams, and the Supercoppa Italiana, a pre-season match between the Serie A and Coppa Italia winners. European qualification for the 2025–26 season grants four Champions League spots to the top four teams, two Europa League spots to the next two, and one Conference League spot to the seventh-placed team.
