Three separate bankruptcies since the turn of the century have forced the club to rebuild itself from the ground up more than once, most recently in 2015, when an American investment group led by Joe Tacopina bought the rights to the name and re-registered the club as Venezia Football Club.

The badge, a winged lion of St Mark, has stayed constant through all of it, a direct lift from the city's own emblem.

Honours have been thin but not absent. The Coppa Italia came once, in 1941, and remains the club's marquee trophy.

What the club has been called has shifted almost as often as which division it plays in, tracing back to a founding on 14 December 1907, when the football sections of two Venice sporting societies, Palestra Marziale and Costantino Reyer, merged to form the original Venezia Foot Ball Club.
