Two local sides, U.S. Cittadellense and A.S. Olympia, folded into one another in 1973.
The one experiment the club has since abandoned came with the first promotion to Serie B. Between 1999 and 2001 it played as A.S. Cittadella Padova. The name went when the club came back to Serie B in 2008, beating Cremonese in the play-offs.
Riccardo Meggiorino's 18 goals topped Serie B scoring in 2008/09; two seasons later Federico Piovaccari led the division with 23 and left for Sampdoria. Manolo Gabbiadini spent 2010/11 on loan from Atalanta, his first professional football.
The 2015/16 side won Lega Pro Group A with 11 consecutive victories and beat Potenza 15-0 in the Coppa Italia Lega Pro along the way.
Home is the Stadio Pier Cesare Tombolato, which holds 7,623.
Serie A has come close twice. In 2019 the club won the play-off final's first leg 2-0 at home against Hellas Verona and lost 0-3 in the return; in 2021 Venezia went up instead.
