Juventus

In 1906, the club's own president walked out and took its best players with him. The split is why the two clubs still meet in the Derby della Mole.

By then Juventus was already nine years old. A group of pupils from the Massimo d'Azeglio grammar school, led by Enrico Canfari, had formed the club on 1 November 1897 as Sport-Club Juventus, renamed it Foot-Ball Club Juventus in 1899, and entered the national championship in 1900. The first shirts were pink; by 1903 the club had switched to the black-and-white stripes that earned it the nicknames Bianconeri and, later, the Zebras.

At home, Juventus has won 36 Serie A titles and 15 Coppa Italia; two league titles, from 2004/05 and 2005/06, were later struck from the record and do not count toward that total. In Europe the story runs the other way. Juventus won the continent's top competition twice, in 1985 and 1996, and lost seven finals along the way.

Juventus now play at the Allianz Stadium, called Juventus Stadium until 2017, with room for 41,689. The Derby d'Italia against Inter and a long-standing rivalry with Milan are the other fixtures that matter most.

One family has run the club since 1923, when Edoardo Agnelli took the presidency.
