SSV Bozen

Handball came to SSV Bozen as one more section inside a Bolzano sports club already carrying other disciplines, and 1965 is when that section got its own life, joining the Italian Handball Federation the following year. Within four seasons the club was playing in Serie A, and it never really left.

Five Serie A titles between 2012 and 2019, five Coppa Italia wins in roughly the same stretch, four Supercoppa Italiana successes — no other club in Italy has matched that run, and the record is not close. Südtiroler Volksbank has backed the club since 1990, a sponsorship old enough that it has outlasted most of the players who wore the shirt during the trophy years.

The team plays as the White-Reds, a name that follows the club colours rather than the other way round, at the PalaResia, where 3,000 seats is enough to make the noise carry. A smaller hall, the PalaGasteiner, takes the overflow fixtures and training sessions. Mario Šporčić took over as head coach for the 2024–25 season, arriving well after the title-winning cycle had closed but with the same expectation that Bozen competes rather than simply takes part; the following season ended in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, beaten by Trieste.

None of it carries the weight of the fixture against SSV Brixen. The Derby Südtirol pits the province's two handball powers against each other, and in a region as small as South Tyrol, a result there is remembered long after the league table has moved on.
