Tychy 71

When Tychy travel to Chorzów or Katowice, the fixture has a name of its own — the Silesian derby — and it is the one date that tells you what sort of club this is. Ruch Chorzów and GKS Katowice are the neighbours; Tychy are the newcomers among them, and they have never quite stopped being that.

The club came together on 20 April 1971 out of pieces of other clubs: the footballers of Polonia Tychy, several sections of Górnik Wesoła, the ice hockey men of Górnik Murcki. What followed was a run of names that would confuse anyone trying to trace the line — Sokół Tychy for two years in the mid-nineties, then TKS Tychy, then Górnośląski Klub Sportowy 71 Tychy, and finally, in 2008, the old GKS Tychy again.

The high point sits early. In 1975/76 Tychy finished second in I liga, and have not been that close since. Roman Ogaza scored more goals for the club than anyone; he arrived in 1975, stayed three seasons, and took an Olympic silver medal in the middle of them. Jerzy Dudek passed through for a single season in the mid-nineties on his way to somewhere much larger. Jakub Kiwior came the other way — four years in the academy from 2012 — and later played for Juventus and Poland.

The Stadion Miejski holds 15,150. Three lower-division titles are on the honours board, in 1989, 1992 and 2008, which is a fair summary of where most of the past forty years have been spent: III liga, IV liga, the climb back. René Poms took over as head coach in March 2026.

None of that changes what the season turns on. Katowice sit eighteen kilometres north, Chorzów a little further, and the green and black of Tychy has always been measured against them.
