The Baltic Handball League title in 2022 took Viljandi past a ceiling the club had sat under for three decades. It came the same year they finally added a second Estonian Cup to the one won in 2014, yet the domestic league championship has kept slipping past them — three runner-up finishes, in 2016, 2017 and 2022, and seven bronze medals stretching back to 1997, but never the top step.

That gap is what defines Viljandi HC more than any single trophy. It has spent handball seasons since 1991 turning up among Estonia's best without quite closing the distance to the very top. The runner-up finish in the Baltic League the following year, 2023, fit the same pattern: close, competitive, short.

Rasmus Ots has been part of that story from both sides of the same career, first as a goalkeeper and later as coach. Marko Koks now holds the head coaching job, working with a squad drawn largely from home — Hendrik Koks and Kristo Voika among them, alongside the Varik brothers, Ott and Jaan-Paul.

The Viljandi Spordihoone holds 680, a hall that keeps the club's matches close and loud rather than large.
