Accra Sports Stadium
Accra, Ghana
Formerly: Ohene Djan Stadium
The stadium has spent more of its life under an assumed name than under its own. handling the work. In 2011 the old name returned, Accra Sports Stadium, with no official word on why.
Its darkest afternoon came on 9 May 2001, when police fired tear gas into the crowd during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
The numbers here can be strange in other ways too: a 1976 boxing bout between David Kotei and Danny Lopez is reckoned to have pulled in well over 100,000 spectators. These days the stadium fills just as readily for music — Stonebwoy's Bhim Concert packed it out in 2023 — while its football tenants, Hearts of Oak and Accra Lions among them, have had to play their home games at Legon Stadium during recent renovation work.
