«Black Queens»
Nigeria has been the measure of Ghana's women from the start. The Black Queens played their first match on 16 February 1991, against the Super Falcons, and the rivalry never eased from there. Three times Ghana reached the final of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations — 1998, 2002 and 2006 — and three times Nigeria beat them there. Cameroon sits a distant second on the list of old opponents: the two have met ten times at that same tournament, five of them won by Ghana.
The team exists because of a deadline. The Ghana Football Association put it together in 1991 to qualify for that year's World Cup, and it has played out of Accra Sports Stadium, a 40,000-capacity ground in the capital, ever since. The nickname Black Queens stuck early and has never changed.
A first major trophy took until 2015, when Ghana beat Cameroon 1-0 in the final to win gold at the African Games. Portia Boakye scored that goal; she remains the side's most capped player and its captain. At WAFCON itself, the title has stayed just out of reach — three lost finals, and four bronze medals since, the most recent in 2024. Elizabeth Addo, another captain, was shortlisted for CAF's African Women's Player of the Year in 2019 and later named to the IFFHS African team of the decade.
Money has been the recurring fight off the pitch. Players protested unpaid bonuses after the 2015 gold, friendlies were scrapped in 2024 over the same grievance, and in October 2025 the squad boycotted training before a decisive WAFCON qualifier against Egypt. Nora Häuptle coached the side to that 2024 bronze, Ghana's first WAFCON appearance in six years, before handing the bench to Kim Lars Bjerkegren in 2025 — who now carries the job of getting them through qualifying again.
