Nigeria is the name that comes up first. The two sides have met often enough in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations that their games have their own tag, the West African derby, and the record is lopsided: nine wins for Nigeria against one for Cameroon in CAF competition. Ghana is the other name that recurs, without a derby tag but with just as much needle — Cameroon beat them 1-0 in the 2011 African Games final, Madeleine Ngono Mani with the goal.

The team was founded in 1980 and is based in Yaoundé, playing home matches at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, which holds 42,500. Green, red and yellow, the flag's colours, run through the kit — dark green shirt, green shorts, yellow socks trimmed in red.

What Nigeria kept denying them finally arrived on 16 August 2026. In Rabat, Cameroon beat Malawi 3-0 to win the Cup of Nations for the first time. Marie Nga scored twice in the final. Yaoundé met the squad with a parade of jeeps and a military escort, and the prime minister was waiting at the airport.

Two World Cups have taken Cameroon to the last 16 — a 0-1 loss to China in 2015 and a 0-3 defeat by England in 2019, the latter remembered for coach Alen Djeumfa's accusation that VAR had been used against his players. London 2012 gave the team its first Olympic appearance, ended at the group stage. Ajara Nchout, who carried her game to Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid and Vålerenga and was shortlisted for the Puskás award for a goal against New Zealand at that 2019 World Cup, was missing from the 2026 squad, a decision that drew debate at home.

She leaves the national team with 49 goals from 109 appearances.
