The exception was Ghana in 2018. Mali came through the group, reached the semi-final and lost it to Nigeria on penalties, then went down 4-2 to Cameroon in the third-place match. Fourth remains the high-water mark, and nothing since has come close to it: the 2022 and 2024 tournaments both ended after three games.
