About
The CAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament is a standalone competition organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to determine African national teams' qualification for the Summer Olympic Games. Established as a dedicated event in 2004 for the Athens Olympics, it operates separately from the CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the CAF Women's Champions League. The format for the 2024 edition in Paris featured 25 teams in a four-round, home-and-away knockout structure. Teams ranked in the top seven from the 2022 WAFCON were exempt from the first round. The final round brought together four teams: Zambia, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. Zambia defeated Morocco 3–2 on aggregate, while Nigeria beat South Africa 1–0 on aggregate. This cycle marked a significant reform, with CAF increasing its allocation from two to four spots for the Paris Games. Nigeria holds the best historical record among the participating nations, having qualified five times, including a gold medal win in 1996. South Africa and Cameroon have qualified three times each. The tournament provides a distinct pathway for qualification compared to the continental championship, which serves as the primary World Cup qualifier. The competition ensures that African teams secure their places in the global Olympic football stage through a structured knockout process.
