The Cup of Nations final in 2022 came against Morocco, on the tournament host's own ground, and Banyana Banyana won it 2–1.

South Africa's women played their first international on 30 May 1993, against Eswaziland, then still called Swaziland. The nickname, Banyana Banyana, comes from Sesotho and means, roughly, all the girls.

Desiree Ellis played for the national side in the 1990s and later returned as head coach. Jermaine Seoposenwe scored the goal against Italy that got them there.

The scoreline swings in South African women's football history run in both directions. In July 2019 the team beat Comoros 17–0.
