In 2016 Tanzania beat Kenya 2:1 to win the CECAFA Women's Championship; in 2025 they beat them again in the final, with a third title in between — a 4:1 win over Ethiopia in 2018.

Ethiopia stood in the way of qualification for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, and Tanzania got past them, reaching the WAFCON finals again 15 years after their only previous appearance. That one, in 2010, ended in the group stage.

Bakari Shime has overseen the women's game since 2019, and the run of results either side of that date is the argument for what changed.

The Twiga Stars play at the Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam, the ground still widely called Chamazi, rebuilt between 2022 and 2024. The federation that runs the team is based in the same city. Blue shirts and black shorts at home, white and dark grey away, with a green third kit.

South Africa, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire are the fixtures that carry weight beyond the region; Ethiopia are the closer rival, met in a CECAFA final and again with a WAFCON place at stake.

The rebuilt Chamazi holds 10,000.
