Malawi's Scorchers had never won a major continental tournament until 2023, when they beat Zambia 2-1 in the final of the COSAFA Women's Championship. Sabina Tom settled it in the 90th minute, and Temwa Chawinga was named player of the tournament. In August 2026 they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, losing 0-3 to Cameroon on 16 August: a place at the 2027 World Cup.

Chawinga finished as WAFCON's top scorer with five goals. Lovemore Fazili has managed the team since August 2022, working under the Football Association of Malawi.

Home matches are played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, which holds 41,100; earlier in the team's history games were also staged at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre and at Nankhaka Stadium. The kit follows the national flag — red at home, white away, with black and green as accents.

Nobody records an exact founding date for the national side. What is known is that it took shape in the early 2000s and played its first official match on 20 April 2002, in Harare, at the inaugural women's COSAFA championship. Malawi lost that game to Zambia 0-8.
