Algeria's women played their first official international on 14 May 1998, a 0–14 defeat to France. For years the gap between friendly and tournament football stayed wide.

Farid Benstiti took over in December 2022 having coached at Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain and OL Reign in the United States. A quarter-final at the 2024 Cup of Nations broke the group-stage ceiling; the 2026 edition, held in Morocco, went further. Algeria lost their semi-final to Malawi, then met the host nation in the third-place match. The tie finished 1–1 after extra time, and Algeria won the shootout 3–2 — a bronze medal, and with it a first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup, in Brazil in 2027.

Morocco is the fixture that carries weight beyond the scoreline, a rivalry shaped by the Western Sahara dispute as much as by football, and referred to on both sides as the North African derby; Tunisia is the more regular opponent in CAF qualifying draws. Naïma Bouhani remains the reference point in the squad's own history, with 61 caps and 36 goals.

The build-up to the World Cup year has not been smooth. In March 2026, CAF moved the next Cup of Nations from its scheduled March slot to July–August, a decision Benstiti criticised publicly as a disregard for the women's game.
