Morocco's women had no domestic game to speak of when the federation formed a national side in 1998. The team took the field for the first time on 19 March that year, in Rabat, and lost 0-3 to South Africa in an African championship match. For most of the following two decades that opening result set the tone.

The shift began around 2018, when federation president Fouzi Lekjaa pushed through a professionalisation of the domestic women's league. The appointment of French coach Reynald Pedros in 2020. At the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, hosted on home soil, Morocco beat Nigeria on penalties in the semi-final to become the first Arab and North African side to reach the final, where they lost 0-2 to South Africa. The run carried them to the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where they again became the first Arab and North African team through the group stage, beating South Korea and Colombia before Germany put six past them and France ended their tournament in the last 16.

Spaniard Jorge Vilda, who had won the 2023 World Cup with Spain, took over afterward and led Morocco to another Cup of Nations final in 2024, lost again to Nigeria, before a fourth-place finish at the 2026 edition.
