Bohemian F.C. laid this ground out themselves in 1901, on a patch of land known locally as Pisser Dignam's Field, paying for the fence and the wooden stands out of their own pocket. A rebuild in the late 1920s brought steel terracing designed by Archibald Leitch. Dublin City Council bought the site in 2015, but Bohemians still run it day to day, home fixtures and all, women's side included since 2022.

For 36 years, from 1954 to 1990, this was where the Republic of Ireland played their home internationals. When Italy came to town in February 1985, some ended up on the roofs of the stands, one of the reasons the big internationals stopped coming here. The record attendance, 48,000, dates back to a 1957 World Cup qualifier against England. Bob Marley & The Wailers played their only Irish show here, in July 1980.

The ground that saw all that is now coming down. The redevelopment plan has shifted more than once, from an early 10,000-seat design down to a smaller four-sided ground, and the latest version, sized to UEFA's Category 3 standard, is due to open in time for the start of the 2029 season.
