Espergærde Stadion

Espergærde Stadion sits at Gymnasievej 5. The name of the ground is not a matter of debate so much as a distinction between the facility and the plot of land it occupies. EIF, the club founded in 1935, plays on this patch of natural grass, which they call Naturrasen. When the pitch floods, they move their training to an artificial surface nearby, a necessity born of the Danish summer rather than a preference.

There is a card on the wall of the changing rooms that lists the capacity as 1,000, though no one counts the heads anymore. The club has hosted matches in the Danish Cup that drew crowds of 260, a number that would not fill the stands if the players lined up on the halfway line. The old advertisements for these games, with their bold lettering and local sponsors like Bikuben, are easier to find than the records of who built the stands. The municipality owns the place, and the staff who look after it are known as Team Grøn Drift, a name that sounds like a system rather than a team.

The real business of the summer happens in July, when the Kronborg Cup turns the ground into a village. Ninety teams arrive to play, and the visitors outnumber the locals by a factor of four. The club website, eif-fodbold.dk, lists the fixtures, but it does not mention the history of the building. The ground is never empty.
