Cutervo sits in the highlands of Cajamarca, and its stadium has been rebuilt around the same name and the same ground since a police officer called Juan Maldonado Gamarra and local residents first laid out a pitch here in 1927, calling it El Sportivo. The formal reopening came on 25 January 1970, when new stands went up for Renovación's entry into the Copa Perú — the date the ground now carries as its own, and the point at which El Sportivo became Estadio Municipal Juan Maldonado Gamarra.

It has been rebuilt at least twice since without changing its footprint. The 2013–2014 works brought it up to professional standard, with new terracing and an artificial surface replacing what had been there before. A further round in 2023–2024 swapped in fresh synthetic turf, done specifically to meet requirements set by the Peruvian federation and FIFA.

The stadium's one entry in the record books is a goalless one. On 13 August 2017, the last round of the Torneo Apertura brought Alianza Lima to Cutervo needing only a point from Comerciantes Unidos to be crowned champions; the 0-0 draw did the job for the visitors, and the 5,400 who paid or were let in — 3,860 through the gate, 1,540 on invitation — remains the highest attendance the ground has recorded.

Run by the Municipalidad Provincial de Cutervo rather than by any club, it has no site of its own; what little is published about it sits on the municipality's pages. Capacity now stands at 13,000, on Avenida Salomón Vilchez Murga.
