The name over the gate has doubled back on itself. Opened in January 1955 as Estádio Anacleto Campanella, honouring a former mayor, the ground was renamed Estádio Municipal Lauro Gomes de Almeida in 1964, when a wider sports complex — gymnasium, pool, running track — was built around it for the state's Jogos Abertos do Interior. The original name returned in 1989, the year Associação Desportiva São Caetano was founded, and the club has played there since. Two earlier tenants came before it: Associação Atlética São Bento in the stadium's first years, then Saad Esporte Clube, which rented the ground from 1978 until it left for Corumbá in 2008.

Unlike most grounds, this one has spent recent decades shrinking rather than growing. A structural refit in 2007–08 reinforced the stands and relaid the pitch, but the so-called yellow sector had already stood closed since 2007 and was torn down in 2012, taking 4,600 seats with it. A four-storey block of boxes and press facilities, shut in 2009 after cracks and leaks appeared, came down in 2014. Capacity that once reached close to 24,000 now stands at 16,745.

The record crowd, 23,989, was set on 25 November 2001, when São Caetano beat Flamengo 2–0 in the Brazilian championship, in a season that ended, as 2000 had, with the club as runner-up. Boca Juniors visited for the 2004 Copa Libertadores, drawing around 13,000. Off the pitch, Raul Seixas played here in December 1985, and the ground hosted the city's first Virada Cultural festival in July 2011, with Luan Santana and Fábio Júnior performing.
