Estadio Municipal Cartagonova
Cartagena, Spain
Cartagonova has never had a sponsor's name attached to it. It opened on 7 February 1988 under a name borrowed from the Romans: Carthago Nova, the "New Carthage" the city was founded as, so the stadium carries the same identity the settlement did more than two thousand years earlier.
The design travelled before it arrived here. The Barcelona architects Josep Ramón Casals and Ramón Domènech had already built the Mini Estadi for Barcelona when the Murcia-based practice CMMP Arquitectos — Cardona, Martín y Plaza Molina — took that same blueprint south to the Mediterranean coast, having worked alongside them on the Mini Estadi itself. Cartagonova is, in effect, a cousin of that Barcelona ground rather than a one-off local commission.
The ground occupies a full city block rather than a conventional plot, hemmed in by Avenida del Cantón, the Rambla de Benipila and the Vallejo Alberola park — which is why the address on record carries no street number at all.
Change has come in stages rather than through one redevelopment. Plastic seating replaced the original stands in 2000, and 2025 brought a further increase in capacity along with a new video screen — incremental work on a stadium that has kept its original name and its original silhouette since the 1980s.
