EWS-Arena
Göppingen, Germany
Formerly: Hohenstaufenhalle
The EWS-Arena presents a study in layered identity. The building itself, clad in vertical timber-like cladding, dominates the intersection near the city centre. It is not an imposing monument, but a functional block, yet the light reflecting off its surface gives it a warmth that feels deliberate, not accidental.
Inside, the atmosphere is defined by proximity. The stands are close enough that a player's shout can carry through the crowd, creating a noise that feels immediate. The synthetic floor, a linoleum surface installed during the major expansion, absorbs the sound of sliding feet and bouncing balls, turning the arena into a drum. This is the primary identity of the place: a working handball hall. The club, Frisch Auf Göppingen, plays its home games here, and the support is constant, filling the 4,100 seats on match days.
However, the venue has changed shape at the break. The renovation that saw the capacity rise to 5,600 also opened the doors wider. The large foyer, visible from the outside, is not just for entry; it is a space that swallows crowds for events far removed from the sport of handball. It is a building that has learned to host. It holds the record for a sold-out match against THW Kiel, a game that brought the full house into the stands, but it also hosted Alice Cooper in 2011 and the VORTEX festival in 2024. The same wooden floor that vibrates under the feet of handball players has also carried the weight of festival-goers in 2026.
The scoreboard hangs high, a grid of numbers that tracks everything from a penalty in the 30th minute to a set change in a tennis exhibition. Nothing about the arena suggests exclusivity; it is a community hub that has stretched its limits. It serves the city of Göppingen, a place where the professional and the amateur share the same air, the same roof, and the same light.
