The Guildford Spectrum sits on a flat, open stretch of land. It is a municipal investment.
Opened on 23 February 1993, the complex was built from scratch at a cost of £28 million. Its architect, Mike Lawless, won the design competition, and the resulting structure was described at the time as the first of its kind in the UK to house such a wide range of facilities under one roof.
Today, it is operated by Freedom Leisure under a ten-year deal starting in 2011. The ice has also played host to the Guildford Flames and Guildford Phoenix ice hockey teams. In 2017, a match against Dundee Stars was abandoned due to an ice fault, and a competition was cancelled after the ice melted.
Outside, the 400-metre eight-lane synthetic track curves around the central natural grass pitch. The athletics stadium holds 800 spectators, while the ice hockey capacity is 1,923. The site has also served as an Olympic training base for teams including the Nigerian athletics squad ahead of London 2012. A £10 million investment project in the 2020s includes the installation of 'Puttify' indoor mini-golf, gym upgrades, and an outdoor fitness area.
