Lappi Areena

Lappi Areena is a functional building on the Ounasvaara hill in Rovaniemi. The structure stands out because of its black cladding and the yellow block that marks the main entrance. It is not a landmark for architecture; it is a place where games happen.

The venue opened in 2003. Rovaniemen Kiekko (RoKi) moved here from Lapinaukea that year and has remained a tenant ever since. The club plays in the Mestis league. The women’s team, RoKi Naiset, also plays its home fixtures on the artificial ice surface here. The capacity for these matches is fixed at 3,500 seats. Numbers above that figure are for concerts, but a hockey crowd does not need the extra space.

The building has a practical feel. It is owned by the City of Rovaniemi, which keeps the overheads low. The nickname "Kirnu" — the Mortar — comes from locals who used to gather here long before the club arrived. It is a rough-around-the-edges sort of name for a rough-around-the-edges venue. The arena does not chase prestige. It hosts international under-20 tournaments and curling events when the schedule allows, but the ice is primarily for hockey.

Concerts bring a different energy. Lordi sold out a show in 2006 with 5,000 people, and more recently Antti Tuisku filled the floor in 2023. These events use the standing room, but the seating configuration for sport remains unchanged. The facility has not changed its name, unlike many venues in this part of the world. It has survived because it does what it is built for.
