The Vítkovice ironworks put up the money in 1937, and had a grand opening booked for the last weekend of October 1938 — a date the Munich crisis and the occupation that followed made impossible. The stadium was finished on paper in March 1939, but it took until 27 July 1945, with the war over, for the club to actually take possession of it and start using it as intended.

Athletics has always shared top billing here with football. Emil Zátopek broke two world records over 10,000 metres on this track in 1949, and since 1961 the ground has hosted the Zlatá tretra meeting every year, later adding a IAAF Continental Cup fixture in 2018 and age-group championships in 2007 and 2011. Czechoslovakia and Czech national teams played here too, going back to a 1949 win over Poland in front of 38,000 — a figure the current all-seater bowl could never match.

That bowl is the product of a 2012–2015 rebuild that covered the stands and turned an open athletics ground into a proper modern stadium, run today under the Vítkovice Aréna banner. Baník Ostrava moved in once the work was done, leaving their old home at Bazaly behind. The record crowd since the rebuild came only in August 2024, when Baník drew Slavia Prague 1–1 in front of 14,294 — a number that says more about the reconstructed capacity than about the club's pulling power, since the terraces of the old stadium had held far more before seating replaced standing room.
