Plaza Jewell
Rosario, Argentina
Plaza Jewell sits at Gould 865 in Rosario, and it has been a field of play since the days when a horse-drawn carriage was a common sight arriving for the match. The third image shows the stadium’s relationship with the surrounding city.
The ground’s character is defined by its age. It is the oldest sports venue in Argentina, inaugurated in 1889, and it has retained its original name, donated by the brothers Charles and Edward Jewell, rather than succumbing to modern sponsorship. The current capacity is 4,000. The wooden grandstand and canvas awning of the early days have been replaced, but the essence of the place remains a local hub.
Today, the ground hosts the Club Atlético del Rosario rugby union team and the Rosario Rugby Union team. Historically, it was the birthplace of organized football in the city, hosting the first "Clásico Rosarino" between Rosario Central and Newell's Old Boys in 1905. The Rosario Athletic Club also used the venue for their successful campaigns in the Copa Competencia, winning the tournament in 1902, 1904, and 1905. Matches against visiting European sides, such as Nottingham Forest in 1905, were played here, bringing a piece of the world to this corner of Santa Fe. Infrastructure improvements are currently underway for the 2026 South American Games, but the ground’s soul remains rooted in its century-old history.
