Opened on May 28, 1929, the ground was built for the Imperial Postal Administration. It stood as Berlin's primary football arena until the Olympiastadion was completed seven years later. That era left its mark: it hosted five matches during the 1936 Summer Olympics and three German Football Championship finals. On August 7, 1936, Germany lost 0-2 to Norway in the quarter-final in front of 55,000 spectators; Adolf Hitler left the stadium before the final whistle.

The stadium survived the war, though damage required rebuilding by 1945. It entered a period of decline in the 1970s and was designated a heritage site in 1990. Major renovations began in 2003, restoring the main stand between 2008 and 2010 and adding floodlights in 2021. A synthetic running track was installed in 2005, separating the pitch from the seating.

Berliner AK 07 has been the primary tenant since 2008. FC Kaiserslautern. On August 18, 2012, Berliner AK 07 defeated TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 4-0 in the DFB-Pokal first round. The capacity is 10,000.
