Roman Shukhevych City Stadium
Ternopil, Ukraine
Formerly: Avangard
Ternopil's ground carries a saint's name that has changed more than once with the politics around it — Roman Shukhevych City Stadium today, Avangard in the Soviet years when it went up on Stepana Bandery Street. What sets it apart from a routine regional venue is how often the city has torn it down and rebuilt it rather than patching it: a full reconstruction in 1984, another in 2000, and a third in 2011 that left the current capacity smaller than either of its predecessors. Where 18,500 could once pack in, then 16,450 after the 2000 rebuild, the 2011 works settled the ground at 15,150 — a stadium that has been made deliberately more compact each time the builders returned, rather than expanded. The natural turf has stayed constant through all three versions.
