The Wedau district has held a stadium since the 1920s. The old Wedaustadion opened with room for around 40,000, in the era when that meant terracing and open air. It was worked on twice — a main stand added between 1962 and 1964, then a full overhaul in 1989, that one timed to the Universiade rather than to anything the football club needed.
What sits there today is not that stadium rebuilt but a replacement. The old ground came down in 2003, and the new one went up on the same footprint for 43 million euros, opening on 8 November 2004. That is the break worth knowing.
The name has moved with the sponsorship — which is why older match reports and newer ones can appear to describe different places.
The roof has caused trouble since. In 2019 panels were found to be unsafe, the arena was shut while the problem was assessed, and the damaged sections were taken out rather than patched. The pitch is natural grass.
