The complex opened in stages: a soft opening in 2015, then the full build-out and grand opening two years later, in 2017. The county owns and runs the facility on Sports Pkwy, with Woolpert handling the design and J.D. Goodrum Co. as general contractor.
The run of USL side Charlotte Independence called it home from that 2017 opening through 2021. On 17 June 2017, in front of a sellout crowd, Charlotte Independence beat the Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 in front of a capacity house. A 3-0 send-off win over Charleston Battery on 23 June 2021 marked the end of their tenure, before the club moved on to American Legion Memorial Stadium.
It hosted NCAA Division I men's and women's tournament matches in 2020, with Division II championships lined up for 2025 under Wingate University's hosting.
