Spotland Stadium (Crown Oil Arena)

Rochdale bought the freehold to what had been St Clement's Playing Fields in 1914, paying £1,700 for a ground that had already been used for rugby since 1878. The club fitted it out for football and opened it in 1920, with a timber Main Stand going up on the south side where a cricket pavilion had previously stood — that stand was in place by 1921, when Rochdale joined the Football League.

The record attendance dates to December 1949, when 24,231 turned out for a Notts County tie in the 1949–50 season. The four covered stands in use today, Main Stand, Sandy Lane End, Smith Metals Family Stand and Reside Estate Agency Stand, came out of a rebuild spread across 1992 to 2000, funded jointly by the football club, tenants Rochdale Hornets rugby league club, and the local council.

The ground carried the Spotland name for most of its history before a sponsorship deal in August 2016 renamed it Crown Oil Arena. That agreement was written for five years and technically ran out in 2021, but no replacement naming deal has followed, so Crown Oil Arena is still what the sign over Sandy Lane reads in the 2024–25 season. The pitch remains natural grass.
