Stade du Hameau
Pau, France
Formerly: Stade Olympique du Hameau, Stade Colonel de Fornel
Stade du Hameau looks like a place waiting for noise. The capacity has shifted many times. Standing banks gave way to seats, temporary stands were added and then removed, and the number settled at 14,588.
The surface is a hybrid, natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibres, and under it lies a heating system installed only recently. You can see why the old names stuck: Stade Olympique du Hameau and Stade Colonel de Fornel , the latter honouring the man who brought the National Military Physical Training School here.
It held the 1972 Rugby League World Cup, where Great Britain defeated New Zealand, and a crowd of 20,000 watched a match in 1951. Today, Section Paloise plays here. The rugby union side has been the primary tenant since the early 1990s.
