Section Paloise Dominate Rochelais in Top 14 Thriller
Section Paloise secured a commanding 39:17 victory over Stade Rochelais in the Top 14 on Saturday evening. The home side's performance was a statement of intent, exploiting their familiar Stade Guy-Boniface to maximum effect. Rochelais, travelling from La Rochelle, could offer little resistance against a Paloise side that looked sharp from the opening exchanges.
What struck me watching was the clinical nature of Section Paloise's attack. And here's the thing — this wasn't the frantic rugby we saw in their recent 25:51 loss to Lyon. The home side played with purpose, moving the ball with precision and punishing Rochelais at every opportunity. Three tries in the first half set up a comfortable margin that only grew as the match progressed.
We had tipped Section Paloise for victory with 66 per cent confidence, and the result vindicated that assessment. To be fair, the prediction wasn't based on blind faith — it was grounded in the home side's superior form and Rochelais's inconsistency away from home. The visitors had lost 10:20 to Racing 92 just days earlier, and that defeat seemed to have drained whatever momentum they'd built with their 21:20 win over Toulon.
The statistics told a straightforward story. Section Paloise dominated possession and territory, while their try-scoring rate far outstripped Rochelais's ability to respond. The visitors managed just one consolation score, a moment of pride in an otherwise forgettable afternoon. By then, the result had been decided, and Rochelais were simply playing out the final minutes.
This victory moves Section Paloise further clear at second in the Top 14 table. With 13 points from four games, they now have a five-point cushion over Rochelais, who remain in 11th place with just eight points. The gap between them is widening, and for a Rochelais side that had shown glimpses of promise earlier this season, this defeat raises serious questions.
Looking at the broader picture, Section Paloise's recent form has been mixed — losses to Lyon and Racing 92 alongside dominant wins over Bayonne and Montpellier. But this performance against a fellow Top 14 side suggests they're finding their rhythm at the right time. For Rochelais, the concern is more acute. Two losses in four games, including this comprehensive defeat, means they're already struggling to establish themselves among the competition's upper echelon.
The Top 14 remains a tightly contested league, but Section Paloise's statement win against Rochelais sends a clear message. They're not just competing for European qualification — they're building something that could challenge for the title itself.
