Stradey Park
Llanelli, United Kingdom
Stradey Park was located in Llanelli. The ground opened in 1879, long before the Scarlets moved into the modern Parc y Scarlets. For decades it served as the home of Llanelli RFC, an old club with roots stretching back to the 1870s. It hosted the regional team until they departed in 2008. Before that, it held a capacity of 10,800, though the terraces once held twice as many fans before safety rules forced the conversion to seating.
Beyond rugby, the pitch was a busy place. Glamorgan Cricket Club used it for County Championship matches for thirty years. Llanelli A.F.C. even played UEFA Cup ties there when their own facilities were not available. The stadium also hosted matches during the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cups, with temporary stands erected for the tournaments.
The club sold the ground to the Welsh Rugby Union in 1997 to settle debts. The final match was played in October 2008, followed by a service to remember those whose ashes had been scattered on the earth. Demolition began soon after, clearing the site for housing.
