Suncorp Stadium

Suncorp Stadium stands in Brisbane as a place defined by its layered past rather than its current form. The structure traces its origins to 1914, when the site opened as Lang Park, established on land that once held the North Brisbane Cemetery. It grew through decades of sporting history, surviving the closure of the South Queensland Crushers and evolving alongside the teams that call it home.

What marks the ground today is the scale of its 2003 redevelopment. The original Frank Burke Stand was replaced by the Western Grandstand, and the venue expanded to hold 52,500 spectators. This capacity was tested in the summer of 2017, when a crowd of 52,540 gathered for a State of Origin rugby league match between Queensland and New South Wales. That record still stands, a testament to the venue’s status for local rugby league. The stadium serves as the home for the Brisbane Broncos, the Queensland Reds, and the Dolphins, who joined the league in 2023.

Inside, the pitch has recently undergone another transformation. The surface is now a HERO Hybrid Ready to Play Turf system, installed in 2024, combining natural couch grass with synthetic fibres to withstand the demands of both football and rugby. Prior to this, natural grass management had been the standard. It remains the primary venue for the Socceroos and the Wallabies, hosting matches that draw national attention. The ground does not hide its age; it wears its history in the architecture and the names it has carried over the years.
