Brisbane Roar

Three A-League Championships have gone to Brisbane, and the first of them, in 2010/11, needed a shoot-out: 2:2 against Central Coast Mariners at the end of it, then 4:2 on penalties. The Roar came back the following season and beat Perth Glory 2:1 without the drama. The third, in 2013/14, went to extra time against Western Sydney Wanderers before a 2:1 finish. In two of those seasons — 2010/11 and 2013/14 — the club also finished top of the regular season and took the Premiership.

The name is younger than the club. It began in 1957 as Hollandia-Inala F.C., and lost that name in 1973 when Queensland's federation required ethnic titles to go. It became Brisbane Lions, then Queensland Lions in the 1990s after a dispute with the Australian rules side that already used the Lions name. When the A-League opened, the club registered in March 2005 as Queensland Roar and played the first season under that title. Brisbane Roar arrived in May 2009, once Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury made it necessary to say which part of the state this was.

Gold Coast United became the fixture that mattered, the M1 Derby, named for the motorway between the two cities. The opponent folded in 2012 and the derby has had no successor by name, though matches with Central Coast Mariners still carry an edge.

Thomas Broich captained the side through the championship years; Besart Berisha remains the club's leading scorer.

Home is Suncorp Stadium, 52,500 seats, orange, blue and maroon. The Australia Cup has stayed out of reach — the last-16 rounds of 2014 and 2015 are as far as the club has gone.
