Ipswich

In November 2023 two football clubs west of Brisbane told their members they would stop competing against each other. Western Pride and Ipswich City Bulls had shared a city, a catchment of junior players and, often enough, the same fixture list. The merger took effect on 1 January 2024, and by the time the Queensland season kicked off a few weeks later the two names had been folded into one: Ipswich FC.

The speed of it matters. Clubs of that age usually take years to agree on a badge, let alone a squad. Here the decision in November had to become a functioning senior side by February, with coaching staff, junior grades and a single home ground sorted in between.

That ground is the Briggs Road Sporting Complex, on the edge of the city. It seats a few thousand at most, which suits a club still working out how many people will turn up now that the derby has been abolished by administrative decision.

The first season under the new name was unremarkable in the league table — mid-table in Queensland Premier League 1, which for a side assembled in eight weeks was neither an embarrassment nor a statement. This year has gone better. Ipswich have spent 2026 near the top of the division, sitting third, on a good run rather than a title charge.

Ipswich sits far enough from Brisbane to think of itself as a separate place, and its football now runs through one club instead of two. The opposition that counts, then, is whoever comes out from the capital and its suburbs — the sides that have always had more players, more money and more attention, and against whom a merged Ipswich has to justify the merger. There is no ancient grudge to draw on. The club is building one from scratch, a fixture at a time.
