The ground reopened in December 1992 after rebuilding work begun in 1991.
Before the war it was the largest football ground in London, and it held 75,000. The record still stands from 12 February 1938 , when 75,031 came for the fifth round of the FA Cup against Aston Villa.
The name has never changed.
The pitch was relaid in 2024 as a hybrid surface, natural grass stitched with synthetic fibre, paid for partly by a £750,000 grant from the Premier League Stadium Fund. Plans exist to take the ground to 40,000, conditional on promotion to the Premier League.
