Alphonse Francis Areola

Alphonse Areola spent more of his early career leaving Paris Saint-Germain than playing for the club. He made 75 senior appearances for PSG between 2010 and 2022.

The first of them was at Lens in 2013–14, where he was named Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year. Bastia followed in 2014–15 and Villarreal in 2015–16. In 2016 UEFA included him in its Champions League Breakthrough XI. Earlier, in 2013, he had won the FIFA U-20 World Cup with France.

At Paris Saint-Germain he collected Ligue 1 titles in 2012–13, 2017–18, 2018–19 and 2019–20, along with Coupe de France titles and the Trophée des Champions. His senior France debut came on 11 October 2018 in the UEFA Nations League. That summer he was in the squad that won the World Cup, though he did not play. Four years later he was in the group that lost the 2022 final. He has five caps as of late 2022.

The move to Real Madrid in 2019–20 came as part of a swap deal involving Keylor Navas. Areola won La Liga that season and the Supercopa de España in 2020.

England is where his career settled. At Fulham in 2020–21 he was named Player of the Season. West Ham took him on loan in 2021–22 and, in June 2022, exercised their option to buy, signing him permanently for a reported €12 million. In 2022–23 he won the UEFA Europa Conference League with the club and was named in the competition's Team of the Season.
